The Expendables 2, despite some clunky dialogue and shoddy camera work, is still an enjoyable film with non-stop action from start to finish. Sylvester Stallone’s muscled septuagenarian soldiers of fortune are back for Round 2. This time they are taking on a ruthless terrorist (Jean Claude Van Damme) trying to sell plutonium.

Barney Ross, Lee Christmas, Yin Yang, Gunnar Jensen, and Hale Caesar are reunited for a job that looks like it could be an easy paycheck. But then the sinister villain, Jean Vilain, steals the classified information and kills a team member, forcing the mercenaries to go on the run again. This time, they are augmented by younger recruits Billy the Kid and Maggie. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Force Awakens brings a new generation to the fold of this venerable franchise, with an all-new set of heroes and bad guys. The special effects are spectacular, with X-Wings and TIE Fighters squaring off in aerial dogfights, the Millennium Falcon crashing through trees with the kind of visceral heft that was lost in the overly digitized prequels. The lightsaber battles are especially amazing, with the glowing neon blades spitting and hissing as they slice and burn their way through bodies.

The new characters are well-rounded, with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega making solid impressions as Rey, a resourceful scavenger, and Finn, a Stormtrooper who turns good in the face of the First Order’s genocidal tendencies. The movie does fall into the trap of relying on too many coincidences, however; it seems as if the film was written to evoke A New Hope and then dutifully sprinkled with references.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

With the second installment of this Hobbit trilogy, audiences continue to follow hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), and their motley crew of dwarves on their perilous journey to their lost Kingdom of Erebor. Along the way, they encounter a skin-changer named Beorn in Mirkwood, giant CG spiders in Lake-town, and a fierce Orc warlord called Azog in the blasted ruins of Dol Guldur. Naturalistic and convincing environments provide the backdrop to Mockingjay – Part 1’s subjective storytelling. And while dystopian sci-fi often brings out the spectacular, the film’s special effects are more subtle, with a strong use of make-up. For example, bald cap and effects make-up gave Johanna Mason (Jennifer Lawrence) the ravaged appearance that she wore after escaping from Capitol torture.

The Blu-ray edition features over five hours of special features in HD, including the 8-part documentary Pawns No More – Making the Final Chapter of The Hunger Games – with directors Francis Lawrence and Nina Jacobson as well as cast members Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), Cressida (Natalie Dormer), Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) and Castor (Wesley Chatham). Also included is a touching tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died during production.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

The third and final film in Suzanne Collins’ YA trilogy brings the story to a satisfying end. Jennifer Lawrence continues to shine as Katniss Everdeen, the “girl on fire,” who becomes a reluctant symbol of resistance to President Snow’s tyrannical rule. The movie is laser-focused on the toll of war, with few moments devoted to her waffling between Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). In fact, the love triangle is one of the smallest aspects of the film, which instead uses its narrative power to explore how media can be used as a unifying force.

The film’s production was marred by the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who played Plutarch Heavensbee in the second film and Mockingjay – Part 2. Though most of his scenes were completed before his passing, a key emotional moment between him and Lawrence was reworked for the final cut.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The final installment of The Hobbit trilogy by Peter Jackson, The Battle of the Five Armies features a battle between the Dwarves and Men of Lake-town, the Elves of Mirkwood, and two Orc armies from Dol Guldur and Gundabad, with the Great Eagles intervening. Thorin overcomes dragon sickness and leads the Dwarves to aid what remains of Dain’s army in their siege of Ravenhill. However, Azog captures Fili and throws him off a tower. While special effects are impressive, some elements of the Besthdmovies feel overlong and unnecessary. Lee Pace’s (Flight of the Conchords) performance as Thranduil is the most disappointing, as his character is used for padding. Cate Blanchett’s (Blue Jasmine) return as Galadriel provides further connections to Jackson’s previous Middle Earth excursion, but her presence feels unnecessary and forced. Despite these pitfalls, the climactic battle is entertaining and exciting.
